Moving Day Every Day: What It’s Like When a Band is On Tour

(image via Pixabay)It’s music festival season, everyone. Over the next few months, a number of musicians will be traveling across the country–and even parts of Canada–to get their names out there and put on memorable shows for the fans.

While most of us are either really excited or terribly stressed when we’re moving, musicians are simply going through the motions. When a band or artist tours, the road becomes home. But what is it like when moving day is every day?

According to many touring artists, there are certain things that inevitably happen during an extended tour. Although not every musician’s experiences are the same, listed below are some of the most common aspects of a tour. Let us know how you think they compare to a typical moving day!

  • Musicians and crew members get little to no sleep. Not only is the band’s entire schedule thrown off–a “good night’s rest” is now considered an hour or two of uninterrupted shut-eye.
  • They eat one or two meals a day, if they’re lucky. With their sleep schedule thrown off, how does a musician’s body even know when to eat? The less famous they are, the harder it’s going to be to find time to grab a proper meal. Touring is hard work!
  • What budget? While on the road, most artists are flat broke. If they’re not headlining shows, the money they’re earning each night is just enough to get them to the next stop on the tour, accounting for food and fuel along the way. Touring is all about exposure.
  • Artists travel so much, sometimes they forget where they are. I’ve been to several shows during which the band either forgot which town they were in or completely lost the crowd by saying the wrong location. Living in a van or a bus takes its toll on people.
  • Musicians often live out of suitcases, off a bus or a van. Besides being crammed onto the tour bus with other band members and crew, most musicians have to be professional packers. It’s important to have all of the essentials while on tour, especially clean clothes (namely socks!) and a toiletry bag full of items like deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste and even flushable wipes.
  • Some bands look grungy because they actually haven’t showered in a few days. Most up-and-coming musicians don’t try to hide it–showering becomes a less frequent practice when they’re on tour. Sometimes, artists will wear the same clothes for a week straight. That’s why those flushable wipes are so important; they keep artists presentable between showers.

Judging by some of the things mentioned on this list, maybe moving day isn’t so bad after all. Even if it does spill over into the next day or two, it’s still not as bad as living in a van for several months.
