The Challenges of Micro-Condo Living

Micro Condo LivingNote: This is a guest post; the views and opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinion or position of Movers.com.

A cliché many people live by is “bigger is better.” For years, that was the case with the real estate market–more and more clients wanted the largest amount of square footage they could get. But as with many trends, the pendulum is now swinging back in the other direction–customers are looking to downsize. This coupled with the downturn in the economy has driven many to move towards the new micro-condo movement.

Micro-condos, or “mini-homes,” are tiny, compact homes–usually about 300 square feet in size. They particularly appeal to millennials, who often feel squeezed out of the traditional home market. However, there are drawbacks to micro-condo living.

  • No one seriously considering a micro-condo should plan to spend their whole day inside one. Most people who live in tiny apartments do so because they spend a large portion of the day in public places, such as parks and cafés. If you had to spend all day inside one of these cramped confines due to illness or unemployment, you might become claustrophobic.
  • These homes are also not ideal for couples sharing space. Two adults cohabiting in 300 square feet is going to lead to irritation and annoyance, since you can’t go into the next room to escape your partner’s maddening habits. Raising a child in such a space would also be staggering.
  • If you live in a normal sized home or apartment, you can walk into another room if there is a noise or disturbance. This cannot be done in a micro-condo, leading some to feel trapped in the situation.
  • Although no formal studies have been conducted yet, some experts believe that tight living spaces may also result in health problems. Your circulation and weight could be affected from not moving around as much. You could also develop depression if you spend all day looking at the same four walls.

While micro-condo living may not be for everyone, some young people relish the idea of living in what amounts to an Ikea showroom. However, there are some issues you need to consider before you pack up your stuff and call the moving company for your things.
