6 Tips for Moving with Your Pet

Tips for Moving with PetsNote: This is a guest post; the views and opinions expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinion or position of Movers.com.

Moving to a new home may be more stressful than you imagined, and in the midst of packing your stuff, arranging for the utilities to be transferred to the new place and all the other tasks you have to complete before moving day, it is quite possible that you have not given much thought to the transition’s effect on your four-legged friend.

In reality, moving to a new home is as big a change for him and for you. And unlike you, he has no idea what is happening and why. But don’t worry; you can ensure a smooth and stress-free move for you and your pet with these tips.

Update your pet’s tag information

Pets can easily get lost in a new environment. Make sure that your pet’s ID tags are updated with the latest contact numbers — both cell phone and landline — and your new address. If she has a microchip, make sure that information is updated as well. Also, make sure that a copy of your pet’s medical records are kept in an easily accessible place during your move.

Stick to your pet’s normal routine

It is important to stick as close as possible to your pet’s routine on move day. Pets, especially dogs, are creatures of habit and may exhibit unusual behavior if you deviate from their normal feeding and exercise routines.

Keep her away from hectic activity

Moving day can be awfully hectic and noisy with so many people walking in and out of the house loading and unloading stuff. Try to minimize the stress on your pet by asking a friend to take care of her on moving day or by boarding her at a pet care center.

As a last resort, lock her up inside a safe but quiet room in the house or the bathroom with a “Do Not Disturb, Pets Inside” sign on the door.

Plan your road trip carefully

If you are planning to drive to your new destination, always use a crate for your pet. Though it’s nice to see your dog poking his face out the window as you zoom down the highway, it is potentially dangerous.

Ideally, you should introduce him to the crate a few days in advance so he will not balk at entering the crate at the last minute. If all else fails, you can use a restraining harness to secure your dog in the car — never leave your pet in the storage part of a moving truck.

If you will need to stay overnight somewhere, make sure that you choose a pet-friendly hotel.

At your new home

Try to bring her inside your home after the movers have unloaded all your stuff from the moving van. Make sure that all her familiar and essential belongings such as her bed, litter box and toys are laid out as soon as possible. Make sure that you keep all the doors and windows locked until your pet has become adjusted to her new home.

Help him settle

In the initial days after moving, spend as much time with him as possible to reassure your pet that everything is okay. Don’t allow him to move about unsupervised until you have thoroughly inspected the house and the backyard and made sure that it is “pet proof.”

Finally, find a new veterinarian and inquire if your pet needs any additional vaccinations or medications as per local laws.
