Tips for Moving with Kids

Tips for Moving with KidsMoving season is beginning to pick up and as the school year starts to wind down, families are going to take advantage of the summer and start moving! Moving with your kids can be extra hectic, but we have some easy tips for getting your move done.

Have a plan

Staying organized is an important (and simple) way to make your moving experience as smooth as possible. Having a plan is a way to stay organized. Creating a plan that includes your children when you move can make moving easier on them and you. For example, discuss with your children what items they will be bringing with them to the new home or what they will be able to pack themselves. Including them in the process will not only keep them motivated and focused on what’s to come, but it will also keep them busy.

Involve your kids

As mentioned above, involving your kids in the moving process is beneficial - especially for older children. Your teens don’t need your help packing up their clothes and likely don’t want you in their room to begin with. Directing your kids to handle certain tasks will give them a sense of ownership over the project. So maybe instead of having them pack up their entire room, have the kids pack up the bathroom items. Just don’t forget to double check their packing and wrapping skills!

Stay positive

Your kids (and maybe even you) might start feeling down about moving from friends and neighbors. You’ve spent an inordinate amount of time in your home and made it your own and so have your children. To keep them from feeling down in the dumps about moving, remember to stay positive and to remind them that all the things they’ve done in their old house they’ll be able to do again.

Give the kids something to do!

Lastly, if your kids are a bit too young to do any serious heavy lifting, keep them occupied with one of our free eBooks complete with activity pages!

Emma Brown’s Big Move to a Little Town tells the story of young Emma who finds out she’s moving from her hometown to Mapleton, a town far away. The 30-page eBook has 15 pages of illustrations and 15 pages of activities for your kids to do during moving day.

Earth to Mars: David’s Cosmic Moving Adventure shares David’s story about moving to Mars! David’s dad, an astronaut has to relocate to Mars for his new job. Your children can follow him on his journey through space with his pet dinosaur Jeff. Earth to Mars also has 15 pages of activities for your child to complete on moving day, including a word search, mad libs and coloring pages.
