How to Make Your Home More Romantic

romanticHappy Valentine’s Day from Movers.com! On this annual celebration of lovers, romance is on everyone’s mind–and then it often slips away for the other 364 days of the year. While many of us can’t afford to dine in ritzy restaurants every night or rendezvous in exotic lands, there are many inexpensive and charming ways to make your own home the perfect romantic haven.

Clear Out the Clutter

Nothing kills a mood more than piles of dirty laundry or a stack of dishes in the sink. Keep your home aesthetically pleasing by minimizing junk accumulation. Of course, we don’t all have the luxury of time to always keep our home in a pristine state, but there are many simple ways to keep clutter from taking over our living space. Washing dishes immediately after use instead of letting them pile up, keeping magazines and catalogs in a decorative basket rather than scattered across a table, filing bills and other important paperwork   and simply putting things away after use will help keep your home tidy and in order.

Soften Your Surroundings

Romance is fueled by our senses, and making your home cozy and comfortable will help you to relax and let go of the stress of the day. Lots of fluffy pillows on the bed and couches and satin sheets can make you feel enveloped in luxury. Soft fabric draped over your end tables and textiles hung on the walls will create a soothing  and softening effect in your home.

Sweeten the Scent

Rich, fragrant aromas will heighten your senses and enhance any mood.  Burn candles or incense to fill the air with fragrances that inspire romance, such as gardenia, sandalwood, jasmine, lavender, lilac and rose.

Set the Lighting

The most important part of ambiance is lighting--no one is going to get in the mood in the glare of harsh fluorescent bulbs. Installing dimmers is a perfect way to produce any lighting scheme in your home. Otherwise, draping red or any rich, dark-colored fabric over your windows or lamps can create a sultry effect. And of course, filling your home with flickering candles will always be a classic way to inspire romance. They are cheap, they smell lovely, and everyone looks great by the flattering flicker of candlelight.

Fill it with Flowers

While fresh cut flowers in vases are always a beautiful touch, they last only a few short days and can be expensive to keep in the house at all times. Keeping potted plants that blossom all year round is a cost-effective and easy alternative. Some fragrant and alluring choices are the African Violet, Geranium, Wax Begonia and Flowering Maple.

Turn off the Television

The average American spends several hours a day watching T.V., and many households leave the set on even when no one is watching–or even in the room. While some people truly despise complete quiet, the chatter emanating from your flat-screen is not effective background noise. When the television is not in use and you prefer to avoid stony silence, try playing some soft music instead.
