Pet-Friendly Dorms

Whoa

Whoa

Well, summer is winding down and it’s about time that college students start moving into school. Meeting your roommate, if you don’t know him or her already, is often one of the most awkward parts of this process. Well, what if you could bring a more familiar roommate along with you to school? Some schools, according to The Seattle Times, are making this a reality by introducing pet-friendly dorms.

This isn’t a completely foreign concept, as many schools will allow you to keep small caged pets (like mice or gerbils) or fish. But, the the term “pet-friendly” at schools like Stetson University in DeLand, Florida means dogs and cats as well as caged animals. So, students can actually bring along their family pet with them to school. Stetson does have a restriction on size (30 lbs or less), but it is still one of only a dozen or so colleges that has adopted formal policies and specific accommodations for pets.

For $400 on top of standard room and board, Stetson students can live in the pet-friendly dorm. If the room is left in good condition at the end of the year, $200 is refundable. There are some other qualifications and restrictions as well. For instance, dogs must have obedience training and the school will inspect regularly to ensure that pets aren’t mistreated and that rooms remain in good condition.  Unfortunately for some, birds and reptiles are not allowed. Still, pet-friendly dorms are merely experimental at Stetson, so that could change in the future.

If you don’t think you can bear to leave your pet behind while you’re in school, it’ll be okay; you still have a chance for an education. Just find one of these schools and you’re good to go.
