Moving Your Phone Number with 3jam

When you move, one of the biggest hassles you will face revolves around your phone. You have to cancel service in your old home and start it up again in your new home. If you use both a cell phone and a landline, you will have to do this twice. On top of that, you’ll also have to go through the trouble of informing everyone you know about your new phone number. If you take advantage of the services provided by 3jam, though, you won’t have to worry about these things.
3jam allows you to keep your number, whether it is a cell phone or landline, and move it along with you wherever you go. Perhaps the best feature of 3jam is its simultaneous ring. This means that when you get a call on your one 3jam number, you will receive rings on your cell phone, home or business landline, Skype, and IM. You could then decide how you want to answer the phone. For instance, if you are at home, why waste the minutes on your cell phone when you can just as easily answer the call on your home phone or on your computer?
There are several other benefits to using 3jam. You can have your text messages sent to your email, and you can receive transcripts of your voicemail (though, from what I’ve heard, this service isn’t perfect). Additionally, 3jam allows for group phone numbers. This service allows you to communicate with a large number of people at the same time. You can easily leave a voicemail or send a text message to multiple people simultaneously (which is perfect for gathering your friends and family members for a do-it-yourself move!).
In fact, it was this absence of a way of sending text messages to multiple people that caused Andy Jagoe and Enlai Chu to create 3jam. They first “virtualized” the texting function by creating a server side inbox for test messages. This gave them the idea to virtualize voice services as well, so people could have more options for answering the phone.
3jam is quite an interesting application. While it can make things easier during your move, by eliminating the need to get a new number, all of the other services 3jam offers can be helpful long after you get settled into your new home.
