Moving into a Studio Apartment

Maximizing space in a studio, from top to bottom
Studio apartments don’t always have the best reputation, as many people see them as a last-resort housing option. However, there are plenty of reasons to move into one. As they are obviously cheaper than multi-room apartments, renting a studio can allow you to live in a part of your city that you might not otherwise afford. Also, with a studio apartment, you only have to provide lighting, heating, and cooling for just one room. Aside from being environmentally friendly, this also reduces the cost of living. Another benefit of living your life in just one room: you will spend a lot less time cleaning.
What to Bring
After finding your ideal studio apartment, you will need to decide what to bring with you. Due to the small space, you won’t be able to bring many of the standard furniture items, such as a couch, loveseat, armchair, dining room table, or coffee table. Instead, you should only bring the essentials, like a bed, small sofa, and a small table. Of course, you could always combine these three by getting a futon or sofa bed and sitting on it to eat your meals. If you go this route, you will have more room to bring some other large items.
If you don’t want to sleep on a futon or pull-out sofa bed (which is completely understandable), there are plenty of other options to consider. For instance, you might want to get a Murphy bed, which you can store against the wall when not in use. You could also get a loft bed, which will allow you to place a couch or computer desk underneath. Another option is to use the standard dorm room trick of placing your bed on raisers, which will allow for more under-bed storage. You can also get a bed frame with drawers under the mattress rather than a box spring.
Once you know what furniture you’ll be bringing, you can figure how you want to lay everything out. To do this, make sure you have the dimensions of the studio beforehand. Then, you can measure your items and plan out where you want everything to go. (next page)
