Moving to Dubai’s Palm Islands

One of the many beachside villas on Palm Jumeirah
For those who don’t know, the wealthy city of Dubai, located in the United Arab Emirates, is a hotbed of real estate development. However, with limited space in the city, developers decided to build up the surrounding water of the Persian Gulf. Thus, the Palm Islands, three palm-tree-shaped, manmade islands, were born.
As waterfront housing is in short supply on the mainland, the long fronds of the Palm Islands allow residents to live right along miles and miles of artificial sandy beaches. However, as all three islands are still in different phases of development, housing is expensive and in short supply. Only Palm Jumeirah, the smallest of the three and the first constructed, is open for business.
If you are looking to move right away, you can find an apartment at the Marina Residences, which are six high-rise apartment buildings in Palm Jumeirah’s trunk. With expansive views of the water, you can get an apartment ranging in size from around 2,000 to over 4,000 square feet. Though the Marina Residences website doesn’t include prices, the buildings offer hardwood floors, covered parking, and large terraces. Thus, it is safe to assume these spacious apartments aren’t cheap.
Alternatively, you might want to move into a house that is already built and available for rent. This is a good idea if you want to experience living in a house on the Palm but don’t want to stay permanently. However, like everything on Dubai, this will be pretty expensive. After searching Craigslist for homes for rent on Palm Jumeirah, I found one that can be rented for one year at the cost of $80,000. The ad didn’t say whether that price was for the year or each month. Either way, it’s well out of my range. (next page)
