How to move a cat

This cat isn't pleased to be relocating!
While the moving process can be difficult and stressful for anyone, it can be particularly hard on your pet cat. Cats are infamous for their need to be in control, so, when placed in a situation completely out of their control, they don’t always handle it that well. However, as cats are a part of the family, you certainly don’t want to leave them with a new family or at a shelter, which can be even more stressful.
Though there is no way to ensure that your cat will handle the move calmly, there are several things you can do to make the transition as smooth as possible. What follows are some tips on how to make the move easier for both you and your cat.
Before the move
It is important to carefully plan your course of action well before the move to avoid any last-minute problems or emergencies. The first thing you should do is take your cat in for a checkup, and ask the vet if the animal is suitable for traveling. You may also want to discuss sedation options if you know your cat won’t handle the journey well.
About a month before the move, have your cat get adjusted to wearing a collar with an ID tag. This way, should your cat happen to run out the door during the hustle and bustle of the move, it can be more easily found and returned to you. This is will be especially helpful after you move, as the cat may escape and try to find your old home. Having your cat implanted with a microchip is another option to help locate it if it runs away.
In the days prior to moving, pack all of your cat’s supplies in a bag that can be easily accessible in the car or on a plane. This bag should include any of your cat’s medications, toys, food, bottled water, and the appropriate dishes for food and water. You will also need to pack all of your pet’s medical records. Additionally, it is a good idea to keep your cat closed off in one room as your get all of your boxes packed up in the truck. This way, you can be sure your cat won’t get overwhelmed by all the activity and prevent it from running out the door.
Traveling by car
While your cat may have a hard enough time being in the car for a few minutes, if you are a driving a long distance, it can be a traumatic experience. The best way to prepare your cat for a car ride is to slowly let it get adjusted. If you don’t already have a crate to transport your cat in, get one well before the move. This will allow the cat to become familiar with the crate before it will have to spend the entire car ride in it. Once the cat is comfortable in the crate, you should take a couple test runs. Put the cat in the car and take progressively longer drives so it will be somewhat more adjusted during the move.
During a long car ride, make several stops to allow your cat to eat and drink, stretch its legs, and use the litter box. Keep in mind that your cat may not eat that much during the trip, though this is perfectly natural. Also, if your car trip requires an overnight stay, make sure you find a hotel that allows cats.
