Moving to a warm climate? You'll have to learn how to beat the heat

As we are now well into the summer season, many of us are spending more time outdoors. The weather is perfect for grilling, going swimming, camping, and doing a wealth of other outdoor activities. However, in a couple short months, the weather will begin to cool down once again.

For those who wish that summer would last all year, there is always the option of moving somewhere with a warmer client. Even if some people don’t want to move to a warmer place, they may have to for a job. Whether you are moving for business or pleasure, there are several benefits of living in a warm climate. The cost of living in southern states is lower than average (as long as you don’t live on the coast). For the most part, you won’t have to worry about ice and snow. And, most importantly, you can experience summer year round.

Despite all the benefits of moving somewhere warm, there will still be several challenges to overcome. In addition to the usual difficulties involved with moving, you will have to get accustomed to a completely new environment. What follows are some tips to help you adjust to life in a warmer location.

Clothes - Since what we wear is most influenced by the weather, you will have to bring the appropriate attire. It is recommended that your wardrobe consists of comfortable, lightweight materials, like cotton, linen, and silk. At the same time, you don’t want to get rid of all of your heavy clothes. As buildings will have air conditioning on all year, and the nights can still get chilly, make sure you have some sweaters and a jacket. Bring along scarves, hats, and gloves in case of an unexpected cold snap.

Car - Just as cars need extra car in cold weather, there are some precautions to take when you bring your car to a warmer place. Any minor problems can be made worse by an extreme change in temperature, so take you car in for a tune-up before moving. As your car will be exposed to more sun, protect the paint by applying a car wax with UV protection. Also, as you will be using the air conditioning a lot more, make sure you replace the coolant before you move and keep the coolant level full to avoid overheating.

Adjusting - It is a good idea to make your move to a warmer climate during a cooler month, if possible. It will likely be easier to adjust if you move before the hot summer sets in. Regardless, you will still experience a drastic change in your environment. To avoid fainting from the heat, try to limit the time you spend outdoors at first and drink plenty of fluids. If you have children, watch them when they are outside to make sure they can handle the weather.

Pets - Dogs and cats can have an especially hard time getting used to a new climate. To help them adjust to warmer weather, make sure they have plenty of fresh water. It is a good idea to place water bowls throughout the house until your pet becomes more familiar with its new surroundings. If your pet has long hair, have them groomed appropriately so they can be more comfortable in the heat.

Plants - If you wish to take your plants along, do the research to see if each type can survive in a warm climate. Outdoor plants would have to adjust to new soil, temperature, and rainfall patterns. Even houseplants can be affected by the move; they will be in an environment with different levels of humidity and sunlight.

By taking the proper precautions, moving to a warm climate can be as smooth as possible. Just follow the above precautions and everything will be cool, figuratively speaking of course.
