Top Ten List: Ways to Celebrate the 4th of July
For many people, the 4th of July is the most important date on the calendar. In addition to celebrating the independence of the United States, the holiday provides us with a day off from work, a reason to throw parties, and, of course, fireworks. Also, whenever the 4th of July rolls around, we know that summer is well underway.
In this week’s Top Ten List, I’m presenting you with ten ways to celebrate the 4th of July. Though I have included all of the standards, there may be a couple new ideas. Whatever you end up doing, have a fun, safe, and happy 4th of July!
1. Watch fireworks - Could anyone have a true Independence Day experience without fireworks? Whether you go in person to your town’s fireworks show, watch fireworks displays on TV, or light them off yourself, fireworks are a part of any 4th of July celebration. If you plan on setting off your own fireworks, make sure you are allowed to do so in your state, and be careful!

3. See a parade - Many cities and towns host their own parades. As long as the weather cooperates, they are a great way to get outside and enjoy a nice summer day. Parades also allow you support and connect with your local community.
4. Travel - The 4th of July is one of the busiest travel days of the year. Driving to the beach or a park, visiting friends or relatives, or taking advantage of the day off and going on a little vacation are all ways of celebrating on the move.
5. Block party - Though they require a lot of planning, block parties are a great idea for celebrating the 4th of July. As less of us tend to know our neighbors these days, a block party will allow you to spend time with your neighbors and meet new ones.
6. Read the Declaration of Independence - As we celebrate, many of us don’t ever think about reflecting on the importance of this day. To remind yourself of what the day truly means, read the Declaration of Independence. The text is quite powerful, as the nation’s founders list their grievances against King George III and describe their struggles to gain freedom from Great Britain.

7. Visit a historic site - Another way to pay tribute to America’s history is to visit or take a tour of historic places. Whether you visit a site integral to the founding of the nation or just a historic building in your town, celebrate the nation’s birthday by taking a trip through its history.
8. Ride a train - For a more unconventional holiday, consider taking a train ride. Check out this site for a list of Independence Day train rides throughout the country. Many offer on-board entertainment and will provide you with a great view of local fireworks displays.
9. Watch movies - If rain should intrude on your outdoor plans, you might want to go see the latest summer blockbuster. Alternately, you may wish to stay home and have a 4th of July movie marathon. You could watch Independence Day, The Patriot, Born on the Fourth of July, or any other movie that fits in with the theme.
10. Honor our soldiers - Last, but definitely not least, you can celebrate Independence Day by paying tribute to those who protect our freedom. If you are going to a party, suggest that everyone bring an item to put in a care package to send to our soldiers overseas. You could also contact a local veterans’ hospital and see if they allow visitors. What better way is there to spend the 4th of July than to personally thank those who protect our country?
