Saving energy, one (hidden) coil at a time

When buying light bulbs, always look for the Energy Star logo

About three years ago, my family received a package of energy saving light bulbs in a gift basket (along with a big supply of green cleaners and reusable shopping bags).  It was a really smart gift idea, and we looked forward to using the new bulbs in our basement light fixtures.

Unfortunately, these new bulbs were not as excellent as they claimed to be.  Several burned out right away, and the others took a considerable amount of time to warm up when used.  For five minutes, the room was extremely dim before gradually illuminating.  I was cautious about using them again given our less than ideal introduction.

When I moved into my new condo last month, several fixtures were missing lightbulbs and others had burned out bulbs.  Walmart had many energy saving bulbs available including several that were contained within a normal candle-shaped glass facade (saving energy while resembling a normal light bulb).  I decided it was time to revisit the product.

I purchased a generic three-pack of the bulbs for my bedroom ceiling fan and my upstairs hallway light.  The bulbs themselves are slightly larger than conventional light bulbs.  Beneath the frosted exterior, you can still see the iconic coils of the energy saver bulb.  But to the casual observer, these bulbs look no different than any others. Well written post, the internet tends to be full of garbage these days, so good work and keep giving out useful content. I especially like anything to do with ceiling fans.
