Lost vehicle registration woes

My glovebox keeps my insurance and registration safe.
Yesterday, a friend of mine (who will remain anonymous) informed me that he’d left his vehicle registration and insurance card in a loaner car after he picked up his automobile from the shop. Sounds like a simple situation, right? After all, if he went back to the shop and explained the situation, surely they could grab the papers from the car and hand them back to the rightful owner. Unfortunately, the loaner drop-off occurred just about one month ago.
It seems highly unlikely that a transient car like this loaner would still hold these crucial documents. Even if they are still in the glovebox, it’s not exactly a responsible decision to drive without them. Getting pulled over without these papers leads to hefty fines.
Documents like these could go missing at any time, especially during a move. As belongings are being loaded into a car, it’s easy to jostle open the glovebox. During a break, other important documents might be jammed into the glovebox, pushing the paperwork behind the box drawer. Similarly, when taking other documents out of the box, the registration and insurance card can become stuck to the other paperwork and be unknowingly transferred out of the vehicle. (next page)
