Ask the Movers Team: Cats in Columbia

“I need help.  Can you please tell me if I can take cats to Bogotá, Colombia from the UK? Do I need an import permit, and if so, where can I get one?”

Lea, I wish I could answer your question in a single sentence.  Unfortunately, nothing that involves moving–let alone moving animals–is that simple. However I can provide you with enough facts about taking pets overseas to help you make an informed decision.

When moving pets, the first steps you take toward relocation should involve a preliminary visit to the veterinarian.  Aside from being an authority on all things related to pets, they’ll know whether or not your pet is a candidate for an international move. Also keep in mind that the age and breed of your cat will play a significant role in the candidacy.

Once the vet has reached their decision, you’ll have to ask them to write up a letter approving the move. Then, if you haven’t already done so, update your pet’s rabies certificates. You’ll need to provide the customs agent with that information in addition to the veterinarian’s certificate.

Now that your domestic paper work is all lined up, get in contact with a veterinarian near the area that you are moving to. A good place to find international vets is Vet World.  Here’s a link to several vets in Columbia.

When you speak to them ask about any policies or bans related specifically to cats. Also find out if your pet needs to have a micro-chip implanted for tracking and locating purposes. I know that may sound like an odd requirement, but some countries will not allow you to import your animal without one.

It’s also a good idea to foster a relationship with your new veterinarian well in advance of your move. Once you’re settled into your new home in Bogotá, you’ll likely need to touch base with the vet right away and it’ll help to have the preparation ready. (next page)
